Five Tips for Rocking Your Webinar Presentation

When you’re hosting a webinar from the comfort of your home, there’s a lot that can either make it shine or leave a less-than-professional impression.Helping you How do you host a webinar from home? Want to know the secrets to making your home-based webinar a hit?

  1. Bring the Energy!

“When people are glued to a screen, distractions are just a click away. Especially if they’re not on camera themselves, they might wander off to check emails or send texts. In a physical meeting, that’s less likely due to the unspoken rules of politeness. So, think of your webinar as a performance. Let your energy flow through the screen to your audience. Do some pre-webinar push-ups to get the juices flowing. Stay ‘on’ during the session, sit up straight, and keep the audience engaged with relevant poll questions every 10 minutes. When participants share their opinions, they feel more connected.”

  2. Eyes on the Camera, Please!

“Talking to a camera feels weird – we get it. It’s above your screen while you’ve got people and presentations to look at. But here’s the thing: your viewers care about you looking at the camera. Imagine how awkward it is when someone talks to you but stares at your mouth or looks right past you. Same goes for the camera. Keep your audience’s attention by looking straight at them through the camera. It adds power to your message. Try a trick like placing a brightly colored arrow next to your camera or dimming the light from your screen. Also, position your screen at eye level – stack some books under your laptop if needed.”

  3. Declutter Your Background

“A messy background? Not a good look for professionalism. So, plan your visible background in advance. Our recommendation: a neutral wall with a plant or poster. Steer clear of laundry, unkempt beds, or chaotic living rooms.”

  4. Let There Be Light!

“It’s a downer for viewers if your video is too dark or worse, half-dark and half-light. This often happens with a side-facing window or when lighting changes during the session, especially at dusk. Ensure that light falls on your face. Pro tip: position your laptop in front of a window during the day. In the evening or in a windowless room, place a desk lamp behind your laptop. Simple adjustments that significantly up your webinar’s quality.”

  5. Cut to the Chase

“No need to beat around the bush. Tell your story without wasting time on unnecessary phrases like ‘I’m going to tell you something about…’ or ‘I hope you hear me.’ You risk losing your audience’s attention. Dive in with a strong icebreaker, outline what the webinar is about, and introduce yourself. No room for phone distractions here.”
